All About Chemical Peels

As we age, it’s hard not to notice the signs of aging you see in the mirror. Wrinkles start forming, age spots appear, maybe a little sagging. Today, there are nonsurgical cosmetic procedures, including chemical peels, which soften the effects of time on your face. You will enjoy smoother and less wrinkled skin, restoring your youthful and vibrant look!

What Is a Chemical Peel?

A chemical peel is a treatment involving the application of a chemical solution to the skin on your face, neck, or hands, causing it to exfoliate then peel off.  The new skin is usually smoother and less wrinkled.

The superficial peel, the gentlest of the peels, uses a mild solution to penetrate only the outer layer of your skin, gently exfoliating it and reducing mild discoloration and roughness, along with refreshing your face, neck, chest or hands.

A medium peel uses glycolic or trichloroacetic acid to penetrate the outer and middle layers of your skin, removing your damaged skin cells. This treatment improves age spots, fine lines, wrinkles, freckles, and moderate discoloration. It also smooths rough skin.

When Should I Consider Chemical Peels?

Chemical peels may be right for you if you have wrinkles, fine lines, sun-damaged skin, discolorations, acne scars, crow’s feet, sagging skin, melasma, along with many other conditions.

What Should I Expect?

During treatment, you will not need anesthesia or sedation. After the application of the chemical to your skin, you may experience a stinging or burning sensation but will not feel pain. After your chemical peel, your skin is temporarily more sensitive to the sun, so make sure to wear sunscreen every time you are outdoors.

Depending on the type of chemical peel you get, you may experience a reaction similar to sunburn. Your skin may redden, followed by scaling, which may last from three to 14 day. Your new skin will be smoother, brighter, and softer.
