The Dewy Glow: Why Hydration and Moisturization Matter, Especially in Winter

As a medical spa our goal is always helping clients achieve glowing, healthy skin, we’ve noticed that one of the most common skincare misunderstandings is the difference between hydration and moisturization. As we head into the cooler months, it’s even more important to understand how to adjust your skincare routine to keep that dewy glow.

Hydration vs. Moisturization: What’s the Difference?

You might hear these terms used interchangeably, but they serve different purposes. Hydration is all about increasing water content in the skin. Think of your skin as a sponge—when it’s dehydrated, it can look dull and feel tight. Hydrating products are formulated to help the skin retain water, plumping it up and smoothing out fine lines.

Moisturization, on the other hand, is about locking in moisture and creating a barrier to protect the skin from losing that water. Without the right moisturizer, all the hydration in the world will evaporate off your skin, especially in harsh winter air.

A Winter Skincare Must-Have: iS Clinical Hydra-Cool

One of our favorite combinations during winter is layering iS Clinical’s Hydra-Cool Serum under a good moisturizer. Hydra-Cool is a superstar when it comes to hydration. It’s packed with hyaluronic acid, which helps attract and bind water to the skin, leaving it refreshed and glowing. But on its own, it won’t keep that hydration locked in for long.

That’s why I always recommend topping it with a moisturizer tailored to your skin type. At our medical spa, we love PCA Skin’s wide variety of moisturizers because there’s truly one for every need. Whether you have oily skin and need a lightweight moisturizer or dry, mature skin craving deep nourishment, PCA has something for everyone.

Application Tip: Layer Smart, Layer Right

When layering skincare products, the golden rule is to apply from the thinnest to the thickest consistency. This ensures that the hydrating serums can penetrate the skin before you seal it all in with your moisturizer.

A great morning routine is  after cleansing, toning and vitamin c, start with a few drops of Hydra-Cool Serum, let it absorb, then follow up with your favorite PCA moisturizer. This combination works wonders for keeping skin smooth, plump, and glowing even when the temperatures drop.

Don’t Forget Sunscreen (Yes, Even in Winter!)

Even on the most overcast winter days, UV rays are still lurking, causing premature aging and skin damage. It’s crucial to finish off your morning skincare routine with a broad-spectrum sunscreen to protect your skin. The winter sun might be weaker, but that doesn’t mean it’s harmless.

Embrace the Dewy Glow

With the right combination of hydration and moisturization, plus a consistent layering routine, you can keep your skin glowing all winter long. We’ve seen firsthand how transformative this simple switch can be, and we are always here to help clients fine-tune their regimen for their unique skin.

Winter might be harsh, but that dewy, fresh glow doesn’t have to hibernate. Let’s keep it alive all year long!
